According to The Sunday Oregonian (don't ask me why I randomly read that paper - I just sort of found it), "the average five-year-old laughs 300 times a day. The average adult laughs only 17." Only 17 times! What is wrong with this? So much! Laughing is so healing, yet many of us "mature" adults have ignored the humor that surrounds us. I have learned, recently, that the lack of laughter in your life can attribute to the stress.
I have been volunteering at Safe Nest. It is a shelter for abused women and children. My experience so far has been great, sad, mind numbing and life altering. The women there are amazing and have so much strength and courage.
About two weeks ago I was talking with one lady about her stressors. After discussing her real life stressors, I asked a simple question of, "what do you think you can do to relieve this type of stress?" I was waiting and expecting to hear answers like, exercise more, meditate, pray, etc. Instead, what I heard made me laugh and then her and I laughed harder when I realized she was serious. She told me in a straight face that when ever she can she will place a fork in front of her eye and look through the prongs. This helps her imagine that everyone is in jail. When she doesn't have a fork handy she will just use her three fingers and it works almost the same. I will tell you that the rest of the evening her and I would randomly pull out our three fingers and start laughing. Although, I don't wish for everyone to be in jail it brought humor into my day and I may continue to do that when I am stressed.
P.S. Last week I did graduate from my 40 hr. training and I am officially a Safe Nest advocate. On graduation night I received my purple ribbon pin, my first purple rose and my "diploma". My diploma really is just a certificate officially declaring my status as an advocate but my teacher dressed it up like a diploma. It was a really special night and I am glad to be a part of something important. (sorry, I don't have any pictures from it- I am still waiting for one of the girls to send me hers)
